Just saying hello - Also, a small plug
Hello everyone! I just wanted to rear my ugly head in here. Some of you may know me from other sites and the Descent 3 community.

About a year ago I launched a website called Descent Files, which is basically an archive/file-manager type site containing levels, mods, music and more for all of the Descent titles. The goal of the project was to store all of the community creations from the past two decades in one place - mainly to prevent them from being lost when certain sites go down. Another of my sites, FreeSpace Files (formerly FreeSpace 2 Sector) has been serving this same purpose for the better part of 17 years for the FreeSpace community, and I do have a site for Descent 3 which has been running separately for quite a few years too - But up until last year there wasn't a site for the rest of the games.

At the moment the site contains nearly every level from the classic days along with tools, mods, editors, music and images. I've filled it up with as much content as I can find, but there is still a lot out there to locate and the screenshots section is also barren at the moment. If you have some good screenshots from Descent 1, Descent 2 etc please load them onto the site. All you need to do is register an account and upload into the right folders. If you upload to the wrong area, I can easily move it around later. I would welcome any suggestions and additions you may have. ALL Descent related content is welcome, so if you have something that isn't on the site - please upload it! Hotlinking is also permitted from any location.

Files are automatically approved, so please double check you have everything in order before uploading. Regular users can only upload - they cannot move or delete files.

Thankyou for all your hard work on the DXX Rebirth project, it's for people like you that this site was created. Smile
Pretty awesome! I highly suggest having each map or mission set have a section for meta data as just showing the name of the zip is disorganized. So things like Map author, or screenshots, or type of map can go a long way. Take a note of how this is handled on sites like http://www.enspiar.com/dmdb/ https://www.quaddicted.com/ or http://quadropolis.us/ .
Unfortunately that is not possible with Descent Files and due to time constraints I didn't have time to implement those kind of features. It's a file manager first and foremost and should be considered more along the lines of a cloud drive, not a portal or download database. I have worked on similar projects before, for example FreeSpace 2 Sector which had all of those features and more back in the early 2000's when those kinds of sites were more common, but it was dropped entirely for FreeSpace Files and Descent Files is just a clone of that. I understand why you'd want that, but I don't think there is a need for it anymore - The main reason is because people will specifically be looking for something by name and the second purpose is to provide an alternative hosting solution for files, so if someone wants to upload their content they'll have a place to do just that and share it - without having to use a service like Mediafire for example.

Perhaps it will be revised at some point but I don't think that was the original purpose of the site. Btw Descent 3 Sector (https://sectorgame.com/d3/) has those features (it uses code from FreeSpace 2 Sector) but Descent Files is an entirely different project. If I'd wanted to do that I would have just expanded D3 Sector to include all of that content. Maybe that will happen, I'm not sure, but for now I'll leave it where it is Smile
