No idea what exactly happened, but Descent 1 & 2 are back on gog.com:
so there is the option again to get the game data legally and convenient as digital download (hopefully with parallax getting their fair share).

An agreement was reached between Mike/Matt and Interplay, so yes, I assume that means royalties paid Smile

All the Descent games are available again - still missing Vertigo though. Would be nice if they could chase that up.

Does the GOG version of Descent 1 fix that weird glitch with no music after map 7 that the 1990s physical releases previously had?

In my opinion, the DOS builds are mainly for use as a cross-check for regressions introduced in the various source ports (Rebirth, Retro, or XL), not to be played as games in their own right. This return is welcome as a way for people to legally get the data assets that the source ports need, not for the availability of DOS executables.
